Why are we always longing for more?

Longing for more

We all have a deep underlying longing for something that is beyond our human capacity to completely comprehend. It is an awareness of something within us that is lacking and which if realized, would make our lives complete.

We all have strong desires for things like love, power, achievement, identity, goods, and social connectedness, but none of them provide long-term fulfillment. We may feel joyful and delighted for a short period of time, but that sensation always disappears.

Many people are dissatisfied with their life, even if to others they may be seen to have it all; a generally good life. They imagine that the next idealized relationship, purchase, or career will be the one that will finally and fully satisfy them. Only for the joy and excitement felt when these things are achieved to disappear with time.

"Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!" Ecclesiastes 5:10

Our supreme satisfaction can only be obtained from the creator of all things, our almighty God. If you ever have the feeling that you are always longing for more, pay attention to that feeling because it is from God. It is a longing for your creator because you were created for a relationship with him and apart from him there will always be that nudging feeling that something is missing.

When we have these longing for things to make us happy, we can choose to either keep pursuing to fill this longing ourselves, which is futile, or we can pursue the one who gave us the longing in the first place.

The futility of the never ending quest for happiness

The pursuit of happiness dominates the efforts by people throughout time and all over the world. There is no purpose to life at all when we are apart from God and the daily routine consists of nothing but drudgery and pain. The human search for happiness never ends.  To be truly happy one has to be satisfied, fulfilled and content. God is the only source of supreme and lasting satisfaction, fulfillment and contentment in life.

"Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you." Psalms 86:4

We all tire from chasing after things that we think will bring us happiness. God urges us to turn to him for true satisfaction and new inner strength. If you are tired of living out a string of days with pain from the past, no purpose in your present, and no confidence about your future then it is time to turn to God.

"Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes." Psalm 37:7

God gives mental rest to his children

When you know God and how to trust him, you will experience mental rest from all of your searching, longing, and never-ending quests to be happy. God gives us wisdom to keep our lives balanced so that we can invest our time in the important things that are in His will and will bring us lasting satisfaction and contentment.

"Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones." Psalm 127:1-2

"I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy." Psalm 116:1
