The Sun, Moon, and Stars: What the Heavens Taught Me About God’s Purpose.
There was a time when my world felt like a perpetual night. In that "dark room" I’ve spoken about before, I felt small, cold, and disconnected. I looked for light in all the wrong places—material success, the approval of others, and my own strength. But just as the earth cannot warm itself without the sun, I realized I couldn't heal myself without my Creator.
When we look at the heavens, we aren't just looking at burning gas and rock; we are looking at a divine map of who God is and who He called us to be.
1. The Sun: My Source of Unborrowed Light
In the Bible, the sun is the ultimate metaphor for God’s glory. Malachi 4:2 calls the Messiah the "Sun of Righteousness" who rises with healing in His wings.
During my darkest days of anxiety, this verse became my lifeline. I realized that Jesus isn't just a distant star; He is the Sun. He provides the "unborrowed" light that sustains my life. When I stopped trying to generate my own "heat" and simply sat in His presence, the "healing in His wings" began to mend my mind.
The Lesson: In the New Jerusalem, we won't even need the sun because God’s glory will be our direct light (Revelation 21:23). My goal now is to live in that light today.
2. The Moon: Reflecting a Light Not My Own
This is perhaps the most touching metaphor for my life right now. The moon has no light of its own. It is a cold, dark stone—until it turns its face toward the sun.
I used to feel "lukewarm" and empty because I was trying to shine on my own. But like the moon, my purpose is to be a reflector. When I stay connected to God through prayer and Scripture, I reflect His peace and joy to a world that is currently in a "night" season.
Faithfulness: Just as the moon is a "faithful witness in the sky" (Psalm 89:37), God is using my journey from despair to peace to be a witness of His reliability.
The Church: We, as believers, are the moon. We show the world the Sun's light even when the Sun isn't visible to them yet.
3. The Stars: Our Eternal Identity
God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars (Genesis 15:5). But there is a deeper promise in Daniel 12:3: “Those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars for ever and ever.”
When I felt like I was in the "mud and the mire," I felt invisible. But God sees every star and calls them by name (Psalm 147:4). He sees you by name.
A New Song: God has given me a "new song" and a desire to lead others to Him.
Incorruptible: Unlike material things that rust and fade, the stars remind us of our eternal perspective. We are meant to shine in the darkness of this world until we reach the New Heaven.
From Darkness to Radiance
If you feel like you are in a season of darkness, remember the celestial order:
Stop trying to be the Sun. You were never meant to be the source of your own strength.
Turn like the Moon. Simply face the Son of Righteousness.
Trust your place among the stars. You have a unique position in His kingdom that no one else can fill.
As I look at the sky now, I don’t just see space; I see a reminder of my redemption. My face is no longer covered with shame; it is radiant because I am looking at Him (Psalm 34:5).
